Current state of mobile phones - native apps vs browser m sites

One of my favourite current arguements  - native apps vs browser m site mobile search company Taptu has released a detailed report showing that the future of the Mobile Web is likely to be dominated by cross-platform browser-based mobile web sites - rather than apps built specifically for iPhone, Android, or any other platform .....

Webstock 2010 day two

Posted 2 years, 2 months ago by Claire    0 comments

Two day of Webstock gave me an all over warm fuzzy feeling. It really made me feel like I was apart of something special. Day one of Webstock did have afew outstanding speakers, like Shelly & Scott, but day two had more even flow of quality to the speakers presenting.

Two day felt like there was abit of theme to the sessions of making start-ups works and mobile come-ubiquitous computing  (ubiquitous" nice shine word to learn folks - seehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubiquitous_computing or is that ubiquitous marketinghttp://www.onlinemarketingconnect.com/lauralippay/2010/02/the-future-of-marketing-part-3-marketing-straight-to-the-brain/) .

My highlights for  day two, was the punchy start by  Eric  , Daniel  and Amy. Eric gave us the inside on how to stuck it out and make that IT start up work with with alot passion and gusto. Daniel , a talented designer, also told stories about rocky  start-up design begins ....  Both guys hammered home the idea for getting user feedback into the design and build ASAP.  Amy is always a fun, loveable speaker and just wants us to do good design to improve the "quality of the day" for all  - hence better days , better people.  ( more of the love theme coming though).

As the day went on there were more on starts upslike Kevin Rose talked though us his top 10 tips.  The last speaker of the day did really impress me - Mark Pesce. Mark was a great storyteller, he took the audience on a journey into the future and also managed to tied up some the other speakers loose ends. Mark painted a tale of mobile-data-ubiquitous utopia - <sigh> which I say, time can only tell ...watch this space.

I must admit post-stock ... I am looking at everything or anything and thinking how can I make that more mobile .... and how or what I can turn into a start-up success story.....

( also i have added a ipad to my want-list)

What can't Google do  ?  http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/google_shopper_a_mobile_shopping_companion.php

I also found this article interesting as it draws on some of Mark Pesce's ideas around "Augmented reality" or AR

Webstock 2010 - Day one

Posted 2 years, 3 months ago by Claire    0 comments

http://www.webstock.org.nz/ New Zealand main conferences returns to Wellington, New Zealand. This time sees 24  international speakers. The themes of this confernce  are web design, development, mobile, UX, content, community, open data, innovation & inspiration from Eric Ries, Kevin Rose, Daniel Burka, Esther Derby and more.....

Day one as been and gone.  The best speaker of the day by a country mile was the loveable Shelley Bernstein (http://www.webstock.org.nz/10/speakers/bernstein.php).  Shelley is the Chief of Technology at the Brooklyn Museum where she works to further the Museum's community-oriented mission through projects. Shelly walked us though her amazing job to bring commmunity to the Museum ( and on bugger all budget ) with tools like Twitter , Facebook  , Flickr.

The other presenters were a mixed bag, maybe lending to the more techical side of the Wonder World of Web so *maybe* causing a narrowing effect of topic interest....  But strong views come though on  -

UX: we need to pull our socks ...

mobile's market is 1/55 of world GDP - its the more important thing to happen to the future of web.

Open data  & mircoformats  are a happening thing. Jump on the wagon folks !

Scott Thomas ( 2nd best speaker on the day ) went over his work on the Obama Presidential campaign where he was design director. Scott walked us though a classic process of design but was using all the lovely tools of the new web .... nice job ( and he is writing a book about it  currently)
